• Genetically Engineered Trees & Global Warming: A Recipe for Disaster
Friday - July 23 - 4:30-6:30 pm
Under US pressure, in December 2003 the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change decided that genetically engineered (GE) trees could be used in plantations developed in the Global South to offset carbon emissions in the Global North. These GE tree plantations will severely impact indigenous communities throughout the Global South, while causing forest health crises that exacerbate global warming rather than help alleviate it. This workshop will discuss these problems and will look at the international campaign that has been launched against the UN to demand that they reverse the December, 2003 agreement and take a stand opposing GE trees.
Location: Wheatley 47 / Wheatley

• Resource Wars, an Ecological Crisis
Connecting the Dots: from the Global to the Personal
Saturday - July 24 – 8:30-10:00 am
This interactive workshop will explain the interconnections between war and trade and look at how both are impacting the life support systems of the earth by exacerbating global warming/climate change as well as massively escalating the extinction of species. We will also discuss how dwindling natural resources are projected to bring about more and increasingly deadly wars in the coming decades, especially as oil becomes scarcer. In this Big Picture scenario we will also explore the responsibilities of individuals to work for a radical transformation of economic systems while also addressing the question, “what is a moral level of consumption?” Speakers include: Dr. Robert Jensen, School of Journalism, University of Texas; Anne Petermann, Co-director, Global Justice Ecology Project; Orin Langelle, Co-director, Global Justice Ecology Project.
Location: Wheatley 57 / Wheatley

• Photography As An Organizing/Educating Tool: Facilitating Community Conversations

Saturday - July 24 - 1:00-3:00 pm
Global Justice Ecology Project's Grassroots Social Change Photography Program combines environmental advocacy with social change through photography. We use photographs to reach communities and the progressive public with ecological and social justice issues. The program has three components: "Corporate Globalization vs. Global Justice" Guerrilla Photography Exhibit photographs by Orin Langelle. Presenter Orin Langelle describes the philosophy behind his photography: "To capture, as noted photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson describes as, 'the decisive moment.' To me this decisive moment comes together in the creative process when light and composition become one with the subject matter. As a concerned photographer, that image should be of a social value that documents the underlying essence of the subject matter that then communicates to or makes a connection with the viewer."
Location: Wheatley 19 / Wheatley

• Creating a Continental Congress
Saturday - July 24 - 3:30-5:30 pm
Global Justice Ecology Project’s Anne Petermann and Orin Langelle were asked by Tim Anderson from One Giant Step to help facilitate this workshop with him and Zia Mian, a research assistant with the Program on Science and Global Security at Princeton University.
Social Forums gather large numbers of activists together. Sooner or later, some of those people may decide to act together. The Creating a continental congress (CCC) workshops will provide a space to discuss and plan for actions. Join us if you: 1) believe in the value of a large, coordinated, nonviolent movement for the creation of a bright future for all people and all of the world; 2) want to connect with others who want to achieve social and political change; 3) want to give voice to your perspective on what next step or steps the movement should take; 4) are willing to work cooperatively, listen, compromise, share leadership and be effective; 5) want to listen to others and build consensus and understand that the "right" next step may not be the one that makes the most sense to any particular individual or group but the one we are all willing to take together. Within the above parameters, Creating a continental congress will be about whatever the attendees agree upon.
Location: McCormack 207 / McCormack

Bush and his guests will discuss the war on Iraq, terrorism, the global economy, and the policy in the Middle East. They will do their work of spreading war, greed and hate in opulent surroundings of $10 million dollar homes, golf courses, fine food and exotic hotels.

The Group of 8 (G8), which brings together the leaders of the world’s major industrial capitalist “democracies,” is a unique institution deliberately designed and driven by men who unilaterally determine what they want to discuss and develop policies for the whole world. Demand to the United Nations Forum on Forests:
Ban Genetically Engineered Trees
—Geneva, Switzerland—

Geneva, Switzerland--Global Justice Ecology Project and the Stop GE Trees Campaign, both based in the U.S., are working with organizations including The Corner House of the UK, The Union of Ecoforestry from Finland, and World Rainforest Movement of Uruguay, to pressure the United Nations to oppose the use of genetically engineered trees in carbon offset forestry plantations developed under the Kyoto Protocol, and to ban their commercial development. On 11 May petitions signed by renowned scientists such as Dr. David Suzuki, more than 160 organizations including The Sierra Club, and Friends of the Earth International as well as over 1,500 individuals will be presented to the U.N. in Geneva backing these demands.

Anne Petermann, co-Director of Global Justice Ecology Project and Chair of the Stop GE Trees Campaign along with Hannu Hyvönen, Campaign Coordinator the Union of Ecoforestry of Finland will present on genetically engineered trees at a side event at the U.N. Forum on Forests in Geneva on 11 May. They will speak on the dangers of genetically engineered trees and present the petitions as well as statements from various organizations and scientists about the threats posed by genetically engineered trees.

“Carbon offset plantations that include genetically engineered trees will kill insects and wildlife, deplete soils and groundwater, and contaminate native forests with engineered pollen leading to forest health crises that worsen global warming, rather than alleviate it,” stated Anne Petermann of Global Justice Ecology Project and the Stop GE Trees Campaign. “It is imperative the U.N. insure genetically engineered trees are not used in carbon offset plantations and that they are banned from commercial development. Genetically engineered trees will only exacerbate the serious decline of our remaining native forests and forest dwelling peoples,” she continued.

With pressure from the U.S., the U.N.sponsored Ninth Conference of the Parties held in Milan, Italy last December, agreed to allow the use of genetically engineered trees in plantations developed for carbon sequestration as part of the Clean Development Mechanisms of the Kyoto Protocol, despite the fact that the U.S. has rejected the Protocol. This agreement, reached over the objections of the European Union, opens the door for World Bank funding for development of genetically engineered trees in carbon offset plantations in the Global South through the Bank's Prototype Carbon Fund.

The U.N. Side Event on genetically engineered trees is scheduled to take place Tuesday 11 May from 1:15-2:25 PM (CEST) in Geneva. Place: Room XXII, Palais des Nations, Avenue de la Paix.

The Stop GE Trees Campaign includes the Sierra Club, Rainforest Action Network, Dogwood Alliance, Polaris Institute, Forest Stewards Guild, Institute for Social Ecology Biotechnology Project, Northwest Resistance Against Genetic Engineering, ForestEthics, Klamath-Siskyou Wildlands Center, WildLaw, and Global Justice Ecology Project.
